Muskingum University will host the annual Miriam G. Schwartz Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. in the University Library Colloquium. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a 45-minute presentation followed by a short Q&A session.
This year's speaker is Dr. Alexandra Lohse, a researcher at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. In addition to her research role, Dr. Lohse serves as the general editor of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945.
Dr. Lohse's lecture, "Ordinary Germans and the Nazi Camp Universe," examines how and why the German population continued to support the Nazi regime throughout World War II. Her research explores public responses to the persecution of Jews and the concentration camp system from 1933 to 1939, as well as reactions to mass murder during the war itself.
The Miriam G. Schwartz Lecture Series was founded in 1993 by Dr. Miriam G. Schwartz, a distinguished scholar and longtime faculty member at The Ohio State University's Center for Slavic and East European Studies and a member of the Muskingum University Board of Trustees. The series was inaugurated in 1995, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Dr. Schwartz's gift to Muskingum reflects her lifelong dedication to Holocaust remembrance and her desire to encourage critical reflection on the consequences of prejudice and hatred.
