REP. STUTZMAN CELEBRATES MARCH FOR LIFE WITH CHEMICAL ABORTION AWARENESS ACT INTRODUCTION

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03) introducedthe Chemical Abortion Awareness Act, which will create new requirements for communicating chemical abortion risks for providers who receive federal funds. This legislation comes on the same dayas thousands of American patriots flocked to Capitol Hill to stand up for the lives of the unborn.
The requirements include providing women both electronic and paper versions of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) product label, with the warning and adverse reactions sections highlighted; reading the highlighted sections aloud to the woman; and receiving written confirmation from the woman that these requirements were met.
Providers who choose not to comply could have federal funding withheld by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) and would have the potential to be sued by women who they failed to alert of warning and reactions from the medication.
"Women have the right to know what is being prescribed to them and the adverse reactions that are likely to occur," said Rep. Stutzman. "I will never agree with ending the life of a child in the womb, and these medications are a disgusting development in the fight against bringing human life into this world. Women taking these medications are not only disturbingly choosing to end a life they are responsible for but are also putting themselves in harm's way by ingesting life-taking medications."
"Making sure that women know the life and death stakes of Chemical Abortion Pills is commonsense medical practice. Only those profiting from the death of precious preborn lives would object to telling women the Chemical Abortion Pills expose them to injury, infertility, and death, empowers abusers, and creates as risk of abortion water pollution. The "Chemical Abortion Risk Awareness Act" makes sure that women know what will happen to them, which is the very least we should demand of those profiting off ending lives in the womb. Expectant mothers need to be told that there can be horrifying complications from taking deadly Chemical Abortion Pills," said Kristan Hawkins, President, Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action.
"Rep. Stutzman understands the vulnerability rampant chemical abortion has foisted upon women. This bill creates common sense protections as well as meaningful redress for injuries," said Jor-El Godsey, President of Heartbeat International.
Key Background:
Chemical abortions, or abortions induced by taking mifepristone and misoprostol, are dramatically on the rise. In the last quarter of 2024, 25% of all abortions were provided by mailing abortion pillsafter a telehealth consultation; this is a significant increase from just 5% of abortions being chemical abortions in 2022.
Because of the increase in access to mailed abortion pills, many pregnant women are being prescribed with little to no real medical consultation. Plan C, which provides information on how women can get abortion pills via mail, lists dozens of providers who mail abortion pills with little to no contact with the patient.
Outside of the tragic death of the unborn baby, taking abortion pills can cause serious medical complications. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approved labelfor Mifeprex (the brand name version for mifepristone) says that "about 85% of patients report at least one adverse reaction following administration of MIFEPREX and misoprostol."
Chemical abortions present a clear risk to the pregnant mother's health and well-being. Women must be made aware of the documented health impacts from chemical abortion drugs before deciding to end her baby's life and negatively altering her own.
