City of Alexandria Announces the Return of Seasonal Street Sweeping, Pothole Palooza, Gateway Cleaning, and Mulch Programs

The City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is pleased to announce the return of four seasonal programs that support clean streets, safe travel, maintenance of key corridors, the upkeep of major gateways, including key entrances into the city, and sustainable resource recovery efforts.

Street Sweeping Resumes

Citywide street sweeping began on Monday, March 2. Crews will complete three passes across City-maintained streets and key corridors, with each pass taking an estimated 12 weeks. These efforts keep neighborhoods and commercial corridors clean and protect waterways from debris runoff.

Please observe posted "No Parking" restrictions on street sweeping blocks, as well as any temporary "No Parking" signs posted in some neighborhoods to support debris removal. In the event of inclement weather, street sweeping will not occur, but parking restrictions will remain in effect.

To request additional street sweeping, please use Alex311 or call 703.746.4311.

Pothole Palooza

The City's spring Pothole Palooza, a monthlong effort to address winter-related roadway damage, will begin on Monday, March 30. Crews will work across the city to identify and repair potholes along Alexandria's right-of-way.

Residents may encounter periodic lane closures as crews move through the city. Weekly updates on pothole repair activity will be posted to the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services Facebook and X accounts. This effort focuses on major street networks and does not include public alleys or parking spaces.

Spring Pothole Palooza is expected to conclude by Wednesday, April 30. After that date, residents should continue reporting potholes through Alex311 online or by phone at 703.746.4311.

General street repaving operations will resume on Monday, April 21, and continue through early November.

Spring Gateway Cleaning will begin Saturday, April 4, and continue on Saturdays until all locations are complete. The program focuses on cleaning and maintaining key entrances into the city following the winter season. Locations include:

  • N/S Washington Street
  • S. Patrick Street
