Baruch College One of Only 33 U.S. Institutions to Receive Dual Carnegie Recognitions for Opportunity and Research

Baruch College has received two national recognitions in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education, earning both the Opportunity Colleges and Universities (OCU) and Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) designations.

These rare dual distinctions place Baruch among only 33 institutions nationwide to receive both honors for simultaneously demonstrating strong economic mobility outcomes for students and fostering a robust research-oriented environment for faculty.

The OCU and RCU designations add to Baruch College's standing as a national model for making a measurable difference in the lives of students and advancing scholarly research.

A Leader in Student Access and Outcomes

Carnegie designated 478 schools, approximately 16% of all classified institutions, as Opportunity Colleges for providing higher than expected access to low-income and underrepresented students and delivering strong outcomes.

Baruch has long been recognized for its role in promoting upward mobility through high-quality, affordable education. In U.S. News & World Report's "2026 Best Colleges-North" rankings, Baruch tied #1 as a top performer on social mobility among all public and private institutions in the region.

Baruch enrolls a highly diverse student population, serving a large number who are first in their families to graduate college. Students hail from 153 countries and speak more than 100 languages.

One of Only 216 Schools

This new RCU Carnegie Classification-which places Baruch among only 216 U.S. colleges-recognizes institutions that spend more than $2.5 million annually on research but have historically not been recognized for their activity, including institutions that do not confer doctoral degrees.

Baruch received the RCU designation for spending more than $4 million on research in a broad range of fields from business to life sciences to mathematics and social sciences. Faculty members regularly contribute research that informs public policy, advances business practice, and expands knowledge across multiple fields. The designation acknowledges the institution's sustained investment in research productivity, collaboration, and student engagement in scholarly work.

A Leading Framework

According to the Carnegie Foundation, the classification system is the "leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education."

In 1970, the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education began developing a classification of colleges and universities to support its program of research and policy analysis. The framework was first published in 1973 and is now updated every 3 years to reflect changes among colleges and universities.
