Lady A's Emotional Ballad Took On Deeper Meaning After Charles Kelley's Cancer Diagnosis

Lady A debuted the emotional ballad "carrying us" through bandmate Charles Kelley 's cancer diagnosis.

The trio - made up of Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood - never intended to release new music this year; however, "Bigger Picture" made its way to the band late in their album recording process and they quickly recorded it. Recent sneak peeks on social media garnered a strong response from fans, and now, Lady A unexpectedly delivered the first track from their upcoming 10th studio record. Trannie Anderson, Devin Dawson, Paul Sikes and Andy Albert teamed up to write "Bigger Picture," which was produced by Jay Joyce. Shortly after Lady A recorded the vulnerable, faith-fueled ballad, Kelley was diagnosed with cancer.

"It's hard to believe it/ When all that we're seeing/ Is one little frame at a time/ We all have our version/ Of our picture perfect/ But He has one better in mind/ There's days when I doubt it/ Got questions about it/ But God knows I gotta believe/ He's painting a bigger picture for me"

"The day before we went into the studio to finish up our next record, this song was sent to Hillary. We felt its message so deeply and knew it needed to be on the next record, so we cut it the next day," Haywood shared in a statement. "Then, a week later, we learned of Charles' cancer diagnosis. God's timing in allowing this song to find us and the message behind it is truly carrying us right now. We can't help but think there are more people who might need to hear it too. We trust there's a bigger picture."

Kelley, 45, and his wife, Cassie Kelley, 43, opened up about the diagnosis on September 29. Kelley shared that "random rib fractures" led to blood tests, and his doctors "found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma, and it's rare. …I feel really hopeful. I really do." Kelley shared on his Instagram story on Wednesday morning that "Bigger Picture" is one of his favorite vocals from Scott, and he's "feeling really good today" amid his cancer treatment. "Positive today. Gotta take the wins."

"Bigger Picture" serves as "a powerful reminder that faith doesn't mean having all the answers, it means trusting God has a greater plan even when we have questions. It's believing He's at work even when it doesn't make sense, and holding on to hope in the most difficult seasons," according to a press release issued Wednesday morning. The song is the latest from Lady A to "embrace life's rawest emotions with honest vulnerability," and offer "a soundtrack to their more personal moments." Listen to it here:
