Larson, Neal Statement on Latest Trump Weaponization of Social Security

Washington, D.C. - Today, Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) and Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (MA-01) released the following statement lambasting the Trump Administration's abuse of Social Securityto target lawful residents in the United States:

"America was founded as a nation of immigrants, and it remains the foundation of our identity centuries later. Millions come to this country and legally receive their Social Security number, doing right by their neighbors and upholding the rule of law. Erasing their legal presence is digital murder and will make life exponentially harder for these victims, who could be effectively forced out of this country if their Social Security numbers are terminated. It's outrageous and flies in the face of every American law and value to weaponize Social Security like this. Trump and Musk feel they are above the law, while at the same time, the residents being targeted aren't being afforded due process. As they continue to gut the Social Security Administration, it could take years for the victims to get restitution, if at all.

"That is why we continue to call on Elon Musk and his 'DOGE' to come before the Ways and Means Committee under oath, so they can answer the questions the United States Congress and the American people have.

"If they cancel the Social Security number of one person, where do they stop? The Trump Administration's weaponization of Social Security is shocking and unconscionable, and we expect House Republicans will remain silent. If you care about Social Security, you need to raise your voice because, despite what he says, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are the biggest threat to people and their earned benefits."
