Likelike Highway, Kāneʻohe-bound, closed on evening of Tuesday, Sept. 1 for emergency repairs

HONOLULU- The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) notifies O'ahu motorists of the upcoming closure of the Kāneʻohe -bound lanes of the Wilson Tunnel on Likelike Highway on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., for emergency lighting and pavement marking installations.

During Tropical Storm Lala, the lights through the Wilson Tunnels went out due to heavily damaged poles, circuits, and powerlines from falling trees. HDOT crews placed light towers near the Tunnel entrances at the Honolulu-bound Kāneʻohe-portal and the Kāneʻohe-bound Kalihi-portal to ease the transition from daylight to the dark tunnel.

On the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 1, emergency lighting will be strung through the Kāneʻohe-bound Wilson Tunnel and pavement markings will be refreshed to increase visibility through the tunnel. Should this solution be effective, crews will return to outfit the Honolulu-bound Wilson Tunnel with the same measures. This work will be announced as scheduled.

Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) continues repairs in the mountainous area surrounding the tunnels on a Monday through Saturday work schedule from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. Crews will close the right shoulder of Honolulu-bound Likelike Highway just after the Wilson Tunnels - Kalihi Portal. This work excludes holidays. Work is expected to last through Friday, Sept. 25.

The H-3 Freeway and Pali Highway will be open for motorists traveling Kāneʻohe-bound. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and proceed with caution through any work areas.

Motorists are asked to continue to proceed with caution, utilize lights and reduce speed through the tunnels during this time. Electronic message boards will be posted with closure information. Please note all work is weather permitting.
