Written Statement: Flooding incident in Gwaelod-y-Garth (31 July 2026)

I am deeply concerned by yesterday's incident that has affected residents and businesses in the Gwaelod-y-Garth area. My thoughts are with those who have been impacted by this event and have experienced damage to their homes and property following localised flooding.

Welsh Government officials have been in close contact with the emergency services, Cardiff City Council and other responding organisations to monitor the situation and coordinate support where required. I would like to pass my thanks to all emergency responders, local authority staff, and community volunteers, who have worked tirelessly to support those affected.

We will continue to monitor the situation and support partner organisations through the multi-agency response, which is now transitioning to a recovery phase. Relevant authorities will now begin their investigations into the incident to understand exactly what happened to help ensure any similar incidents are avoided. Our priority remains the safety of the people and communities of Wales.

If you have been impacted by this incident and require assistance, you may be entitled to support under the Welsh Government Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF). Under the DAF, if someone has experienced a disaster such as a flood or fire in their home and are experiencing severe financial hardship they may be eligible for an Emergency Assistance Payment (EAP) grant to help with essential costs after an emergency.

Further updates regarding the incident will be provided by partner organisations as the investigation proceeds.

This statement is being issued during recess to keep Members informed. Should Members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Senedd returns I would be happy to do so.
