Richard Gonzalez is a Disposal Service Representative for DLA Disposition Services, based out of the Tuscan, Ariz. location.
What are your regions of responsibility?
I'm responsible for Yuma and working with Camp Navajo in Flagstaff, and assist customers at Ft. Bliss, Tx.
Tell us about your career before you began working as a DSR. For example, any military service or previous DLA roles?
Prior to joining the DLA family, I served nine years in the Army as an infantry soldier from 1998 to 2007. I was injured in Iraq and eventually separated from the military, which was a major turning point in my life. I continued my service as an Army civilian, working as a target system operator lead for the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.
From there, I transitioned into DLA, starting as the demilitarization lead and then into my current role as a Disposal Service Representative. Every step of that journey - as soldier, civilian, and now DSR - has shaped how I support others today.
What is the value that you see about your role as a DSR?
We're the people customers turn to when they're unsure, overwhelmed, or trying to get things right. We take policies and break them down into something people can understand and follow, turning a stressful process into a manageable one. Because of that, we help prevent delays, reduce mistakes, keep operations compliant, support people when they need guidance, and provide leadership with the accurate information they depend on to make solid decisions. It's practical, everyday value and people feel it.
Is there a memorable moment as a DSR that stands out for you and why do you find that one unique?
What advice would you give to someone who is new to using the services of a DSR?
Don't hesitate to reach out and get ahold of us. You don't need to know every policy or process, that is what we are here for. The more you share about what you are trying to do the easier it is for us to guide you, catch issues early, and save time. Think of a DSR as a teammate, not a last stop!
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part of the job is getting to help the warfighter and our customers feel confident instead of overwhelmed. The disposal and reutilization process can be confusing and I like being the person who can break it down, guide them through it, and make things easier. It's a good feeling knowing the support I give helps units stay ready, save money, and get what they need without extra stress.
Anything you'd like to share about your life outside of work? (Hobbies, interests, favorite books or quotes, etc.)
Outside of work, my biggest joy is spending time with my family. My wife and I love planning gatherings, bringing everyone together, and making the most of every moment we share. This year has been especially meaningful because we welcomed a new addition to our family, officially making us grandparents. Celebrating our grandson's first birthday has been one of the most exciting and heartwarming milestones for us.
