On 13 January, Minister of Finance Kristupas Vaitiekūnas will meet with representatives of international financial institutions in Luxembourg: Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Marjut Falkstedt, Chief Executive of the European Investment Fund (EIF), Pierre Gramegna, Managing Director of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and Gilles Roth, Minister of Finance of Luxembourg. A meeting with Lithuanians working at the European Investment Bank is also planned during the visit.
The meetings will focus on the strategic strengthening of the National Development Bank ILTE, i.e. greater involvement of international financial institutions in the governance and transparency of the National Development Bank, risk management, thus increasing the international confidence necessary to attract private and international funds.
"In order to achieve higher standards of governance, greater transparency and international credibility, we are willing to have as many competent international experts as possible directly involved in the activities of the ILTE. At the same time, we are also seeking a new direction for the Lithuanian National Development Bank to start active participation in the activities of international financial institutions - not only to take, but also to give - to invest in international financial instruments", Minister of Finance Vaitiekūnas stressed.
The aim of the Ministry of Finance is for the ILTE to become a fully-fledged national development bank operating in accordance with international best practices. It is planned that already in 2027 ILTE will be able to independently issue bonds on international markets after receiving the ratings of international credit rating agencies.
During the visit, memoranda of cooperation will be signed with the European Investment Fund and the European Stability Mechanism on capacity building for the ILTE, and opportunities to contribute to the implementation of the ILTE Hub and other joint projects will be discussed with the President of the European Investment Bank.
The Minister will also meet with Lithuanians working at the European Investment Bank. During the meeting, the Minister will be interested in their insights and suggestions on how to purposefully strengthen Lithuania's institutional representation, the visibility of competences and participation in decision-making processes in international financial institutions. It is also planned to discuss how Lithuanians working at the EIB see the strengthening of Lithuania's economic competitiveness, attracting investments and the main long-term financing priorities in the context of the European Union.
