WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Cleo Fields (D-LA-06) today issued the following statement in response to the tragic mass shooting that took the lives of eight children in the Cedar Grove neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana, early Sunday morning:
"I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the eight innocent children whose lives were cut tragically short in the Cedar Grove neighborhood this morning. I am also praying for the two women who were injured - one of whom remains in critical condition - and I ask that all of Louisiana join me in lifting them up.
What occurred in today's early morning hours is, as Mayor Arceneaux said, perhaps one of the worst tragedies this city has ever seen. A crime scene spanning four locations, eight children gone ranging in age from just one to fourteen years old - there are no words.
I have full confidence in Police Chief Wayne Smith, Mayor Arceneaux, the Shreveport Police Department, and Louisiana State Police as they work through what is an extensive and deeply painful investigation. I also commend the Shreveport City Council for their swift response and their commitment to organizing a community prayer vigil for the people of Cedar Grove. I encourage all residents to stand together in this moment of grief. Shreveport is a resilient community, and we will get through this together."
