Consumer Alert: National Consumer Protection Week

Tallahassee, Fla. - National Consumer Protection Week (March 1-7) is dedicated to individuals understand their consumer rights and learn how to avoid scams and fraud. The Office of Financial Regulation reminds Floridians of the many resources available to them to help navigate financial decisions and avoid financial fraud.

The OFR provides regulatory oversight for Florida's financial services industry and works to ensure a safe and secure financial marketplace for Floridians. We are also a valuable resource for consumers. Before banking your money, taking out a loan, using a check casher, or making an investment, be sure you to verify the license or registration of the company or individual with our office. When considering ways to make smart financial decisions, keep these three key topics in mind:

  • Efficiently managing your money. It is important to establish savings and spending habits that align with your financial situation. Create and follow a budget. Research large purchases beforehand, and plan for payment - whether by cash, check, debit or credit card. Build savings accounts, emergency funds, and retirement investments that will help you reach your financial goals.
  • Understanding credit, loans and debt. Building credit is important if you plan to apply for a loan. Whether it is an auto loan or mortgage, always fully research and understand the type of loan you are seeking and the terms of any agreements.
  • Guarding against financial scams. Protect your personal identifying information to reduce your risk of being a victim of identity theft. Regularly check your accounts to confirm all transactions are legitimate. Contact the financial institution immediately if you find inconsistencies on your statement. Learn the different types of financial scams, and the red flags that can help you identify them.
