Governor Newsom proclaims Farmworker Day

SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring August 26, 2026, as "California Farmworker Day."

PROCLAMATION

The story of farmworkers in California is one of perseverance and resilience, one where families continuously work hard toward a better future. That story stretches across generations, starting from the Bracero era and encompassing the many diverse communities whose labor, heritage, and sacrifice helped shape California's fields and paved the way for generations that followed. They endured grueling conditions, discrimination, and exploitation while building lives and creating opportunities for their families and communities.

From those struggles grew a movement that changed California. Leaders like Larry Itliong, Dolores Huerta, Philip Vera Cruz, and countless farmworkers organized across communities for fair wages, safer working conditions, and dignity on the job. Their courage helped transform the labor movement and secure protections that continue to benefit workers today.

That legacy of courage and sacrifice lives on. Farmworkers work through extreme heat and difficult conditions, making sacrifices every day to provide for their families. Today, they are forced to endure even more, as the federal government targets and terrorizes farmworkers and farmworker communities with aggressive federal immigration actions.

But even in the face of intimidation and fear, California's farmworkers continue to show the resilience that generations before them carried into our fields, our communities, and our labor movements. We owe farmworkers a profound debt of gratitude - but their courage deserves more. It demands a commitment to stand with them, to support them as they have always supported us.

California continues to stand alongside farmworkers and their families, protecting workers regardless of immigration status, strengthening workplace protections, connecting communities with critical resources and legal assistance, and defending the fundamental dignity of those whose labor has given so much to our state. We will continue to push the federal government to provide farmworkers the ability to work lawfully and stay with their families, including a pathway to citizenship for longstanding Californians.

Today, we honor more than the labor that puts food on our tables. We honor the people behind it - their heritage, their sacrifices, the movement they built, the families they have sustained, and the generations carrying that legacy forward. We recommit ourselves to ensuring that the people who help feed our state are afforded the dignity, security, and opportunity they have earned.

NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2026 as "Farmworker Day."

La historia de los trabajadores del campo en California es una historia de perseverancia y resiliencia; una historia en la que las familias trabajan continuamente con esfuerzo y dedicación para construir un futuro mejor. Esta historia abarca generaciones, comenzando con la época de los braceros e incluyendo a diversas comunidades, cuyo trabajo, herencia y sacrificio ayudaron a dar forma a los campos de California y abrieron el camino para las generaciones que los siguieron. Soportaron condiciones extremas, discriminación y explotación mientras construían sus vidas y creaban oportunidades para sus familias y comunidades.

De esas luchas surgió un movimiento que transformó a California. Hoy se ven obligados a enfrentar aún más dificultades, ya que el gobierno federal ataca e intimida a los trabajadores del campo y a sus comunidades mediante acciones agresivas de control migratorio.

Pero incluso ante las intimidaciones y el miedo, los trabajadores del campo de California continúan demostrando la resiliencia que generaciones anteriores llevaron a nuestros campos, nuestras comunidades y nuestros movimientos laborales. Tenemos una profunda deuda de gratitud con los trabajadores del campo, pero su valentía merece más. Exige un compromiso de estar a su lado, de apoyarlos como siempre nos han apoyado a nosotros.

California continuará junto a los campesinos y sus familias protegiendo a los trabajadores sin importar su estatus migratorio, fortaleciendo las protecciones laborales, conectando a las comunidades con recursos esenciales y asistencia legal y defendiendo la dignidad fundamental de quienes, con su trabajo, han aportado tanto a nuestro estado. Seguiremos presionando al gobierno federal para que los campesinos puedan trabajar legalmente, permanecer con sus familias, y tener un camino a la ciudadanía después de años de hacer California su hogar.

Hoy, honramos mucho más que el trabajo que pone alimentos en nuestras mesas.
