Growing Hope is expanding its incubator kitchen operations in Ypsilanti through new partnerships, equipment investments, and facility improvements designed to increase opportunities for local food entrepreneurs and strengthen the city's growing small business ecosystem. In partnership with Ann Arbor SPARK and the Innovate Ypsi initiative, the expansion includes upgrades at Bridge Community Café, which will serve as the inaugural Growing Hope Kitchen Network site, helping address growing demand for affordable, licensed kitchen space in Washtenaw County.
Launched in 2018 by Growing Hope, the incubator kitchen was created to provide affordable access to commercial kitchens for entrepreneurs looking to launch or scale food businesses. What began as a single prep station has grown into a fully equipped facility that has supported more than 70 local food entrepreneurs to date - including 17 businesses that have opened brick-and-mortar storefronts, launched food trucks, or moved into co-packing facilities.
That demand became even more urgent in 2024 following the closure of Rosie's Community Kitchen in Ypsilanti Township, leaving Growing Hope as the only remaining licensed incubator kitchen in Washtenaw County. In response, the organization is expanding its model through a new Satellite Kitchen Network that will connect entrepreneurs with underutilized licensed kitchens throughout the county.
Support from Innovate Ypsi has helped fund upgrades to commercial kitchen equipment at Bridge Community Café, increasing access to essential tools such as convection ovens, blenders, and an ice machine. The investment is expected to add more than 30 hours of weekly rental capacity and support up to 25 additional food businesses.
The project also builds on broader momentum at Growing Hope's Ypsilanti Farmers MarketPlace (16 S. Washington St., Ypsilanti, MI 48197), where the organization is investing in renovations to the forthcoming Growing Hope Accelerator Kitchen to better serve entrepreneurs and create a more welcoming community gathering space. Together, the kitchen expansion, satellite model, and facility improvements reflect Growing Hope's long-term vision for building a vibrant and equitable local food economy in Ypsilanti.
"This investment helps us meet a growing need in our community," said Julius Buzzard, executive director of Growing Hope. "We've seen firsthand how access to affordable commercial kitchen space can help entrepreneurs test ideas, grow their customer base, and eventually open businesses of their own. These investments and partnerships allow us to expand our capacity while creating more pathways for local entrepreneurs to succeed right here in Ypsilanti."
Bridge Community Cafe is located on Michigan Avenue near the SPARK East business incubator and the newly renovated downtown library, and across from Michigan Medicine's new Ypsilanti Health Center at MI-HQ, and, through this project, continues the broader revitalization efforts underway in downtown Ypsilanti.
"Bridge Community Café was built to be a welcoming space where people can gather, connect, and experience community," said Sierra Lambert, owner of Bridge Community Café. "Partnering with Growing Hope allows us to extend that mission by creating opportunities for local food entrepreneurs who need space and resources to grow. We're excited to be part of something that creates both economic opportunity and community impact."
Innovate Ypsi is a program managed by Ann Arbor SPARK in partnership with the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, and Washtenaw County that supports projects advancing entrepreneurship, placemaking, and economic opportunity in Ypsilanti. The program invests in projects that strengthen Ypsilanti's entrepreneurial ecosystem, activate underutilized spaces, and support inclusive economic growth.
"Growing Hope is a great example of an organization identifying a community need and developing creative, scalable solutions that support entrepreneurship and economic opportunity," said Jennifer Olmstead, vice president of business development at Ann Arbor SPARK. "At SPARK, we want entrepreneurs and organizations to see us as a resource and partner as they look to grow, expand, and bring new ideas to life. This project reflects the kind of collaborative, community-driven work that strengthens Ypsilanti's entrepreneurial ecosystem."
Growing Hope's expansion project is underway and expected to be completed by the end of June. Tours of the expanding facilities will be offered during the upcoming Ypsi 9th Hour hosted at Growing Hope on June 25 from 5-6:30 p.m.
