The Southwestern Outdoor Adventure program recently hosted a group of students on an excursion to Rockport, Texas to experience the Whooping Crane Festival. Each year, hundreds of majestic Whooping Cranes migrate from Northwest Canada to spend the winter along the Texas Gulf Coast. Spanning five feet tall with a wingspan of nearly eight feet, the Whooping Crane is the tallest bird in North America and once faced extinction. Today, there are an estimated 800 Whooping Cranes on Earth, with many of those spending the winter in south Texas. In addition to witnessing the birds in their natural habitat, the students got to go hiking and camping among the salt marshes and bays of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
