Offshore Wind: France Pursues Projects in the Mediterranean Sea

Version Française : Orrick a conseillé la Direction générale de l'énergie et du climat dans le cadre de la procédure d'attribution des projets de parcs éoliens flottants en Méditerranée (dite « AO6 »)

The French government has selected the winners of a competitive bidding process to develop two floating offshore wind projects in the Mediterranean Sea.

Orrick advised the French Directorate General for Energy and Climate in its focus on two projects.

  • A consortium composed of Ocean Winds and Eolien en Mer Participation will develop a project in the so-called "Narbonaise" area.
  • Eoliennes Méditerranée Grand Large, in which EDF Renewables and Maple Power are shareholders, will pursue a project in the Gulf of Fos.

THE IMPACT

These two projects, each with a capacity of 250 MW, will increase France's renewable energy production capacity in line with its multi-year energy program.

The award of these projects is part of France's goal to reach 18 GW of offshore wind farms in operation by 2035 and 45 GW by 2050, particularly through the development of floating wind farm projects.

The award of these projects brings the total capacity of offshore wind projects in operation, under construction and in development on French coasts to nearly 5.3 GW.

THE TEAM

Geoffroy Berthon led the Orrick team that advised the Directorate General for Energy and Climate. The team included Constance Boillot and Lek Regjepaj.

The team has also advised on other competitive procedures related to offshore wind farms, both fixed and floating, launched by the French government, including on a floating wind farm project south of Brittany last year.
