6 March 2026, Baku - Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, followed by a joint press conference.
The two ministers discussed the development of Moldova-Azerbaijan relations and prospects for deepening bilateral dialogue in several areas of mutual interest. On this occasion, the Interministerial Consultations Plan for 2026-2027 was signed, which will contribute to intensifying bilateral diplomatic dialogue.
The interlocutors underlined the importance of economic cooperation and noted the positive trend in trade recorded in 2025. Interest was also expressed in expanding cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields.
A key topic of the discussions was the energy sector, which can become one of the main pillars of bilateral relations. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi reiterated that ensuring energy security through diversification of natural gas supply sources and routes is among the main priorities of the Government of the Republic of Moldova. The Minister also thanked the Azerbaijani authorities for the support provided to Moldova, including during the 2022 energy crisis-an act that reaffirmed the relationship of friendship and trust between the two states.
"We want to expand economic and energy cooperation and fully harness the potential of our relations. The Republic of Azerbaijan is an important partner for strengthening energy security and for developing joint projects for the benefit of our citizens," said Minister Mihai Popșoi.
For his part, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov reaffirmed Azerbaijan's readiness to deepen bilateral dialogue and develop cooperation projects in areas of mutual interest. The Azerbaijani official highlighted the importance of maintaining an active and pragmatic political dialogue between the two countries.
"Relations between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova are developing in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect, including in the economic, energy, cultural and educational fields. Since 2023, the capitals of our two countries have been connected by direct flights, facilitating people-to-people contacts and cooperation between business communities. We welcome the interest in expanding cooperation, including through investments and renewable energy projects, as well as regional green energy initiatives," said Jeyhun Bayramov.
The agenda also included cooperation within international organisations and regional security developments. The parties reaffirmed mutual support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and underlined the importance of peace and stability in the region.
Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi reiterated the invitation to his counterpart to pay an official visit to the Republic of Moldova at a mutually convenient date, and to participate in the Ministerial Session of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers, to be held in Chișinău on 14-15 May 2026.
