“The Banking Sector Climate Risk Exposure Assessment” Report published

The Bank of Mongolia, in collaboration with the World Bank Group, is releasing the "Banking Sector Climate Risk Exposure Assessment" report.

This report provides an assessment, as of the reporting date, of the Mongolian banking sector's exposure to climate change, covering both (1) Physical and (2) Transition risks.

Mongolia is historically vulnerable to climate change related risks due to a combination of geographical and socio-economic factors, including the recurrent extreme weather events such as droughts, dzud, river floods, and flash floods etc. Therefore, assessing both climate change-related risks and opportunities in the Mongolian economy and financial sector is crucial for building resilience, supporting adaptation, preventing, and effectively managing climate-associated risks.

This report presents the recommendations, key issues, and findings on climate change risks in the Mongolian banking sector, and is organized with the following sections:

  • Impacts of climate change in Mongolia
  • Assessment of climate-related financial risk exposure in the banking sector, as of the reporting date,
  • Data gaps and methodology limitations
  • Concluding remarks and way forward
