Hurricane Milton Update #5: Town Closures and Resident Hotline

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCTOBER 8, 2024, AT 6:15 P.M.

Blue and Green Bus Routes Suspended; No Changes to Solid Waste Services

DAVIE, Fla. - The Town of Davie is closely monitoring Hurricane Milton and implementing necessary precautions as it remains a category 4 storm. A tropical storm warning and flood watch are in effect for our area. Localized flooding and tornadic activities are possible as the storm inches closer to Florida.

Please take note of the changes to the Town's operations for tomorrow, October 9, and Thursday, October 10, 2024:

Town Operations

  • Town of Davie municipal offices will close tomorrow, October 9 at noon through Thursday, October 10, 2024. Normal hours of operation will resume on Monday, October 14, 2024.
  • The Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center will be open from 5 a.m. to noon on October 9, 2024, and anticipates resuming regular hours of operations on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 5 a.m.
  • The Pine Island Multipurpose Center will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on October 9, 2024, and anticipates resuming regular hours of operations on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 8 a.m.

Parks and Playgrounds

  • All Town parks and playgrounds will close tomorrow, October 9 at noon, and remain closed on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
  • A rapid impact assessment will be conducted on Friday, October 11 to determine if parks will reopen.

Resident Hotline

The Town of Davie resident hotline, 954-797-1122, will be activated tomorrow, October 9 at noon through Friday, October 11, 2024, at 7 a.m. to ensure that we maintain open lines of communication with all community members. This is not a replacement for 911 or any emergency services and should only be used for updates.

SFEC Community Shuttles

  • The Blue and Green bus routes and the South Florida Education Center (SFEC) BCT Route shuttles will not be operating tomorrow, October 9, and Thursday, October 10, 2024.
  • An impact assessment will be conducted to determine any operational impacts on Friday's bus schedule.

Solid Waste Services

  • Currently, there are no changes to the solid waste services including curbside garbage collection and bulk pickup for this week.
  • Residents residing in Bulk Zones 9, 10, 11, and 12, who are anticipated to receive services tomorrow, October 9 through Saturday, October 12, 2024, please continue to monitor the Town for any changes to the bulk schedule before putting items out for collection this week.
  • Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes as changes to schedule may occur last minute due to the storm's impact and severity. Landscape trimming projects such as tree limbs and shrubbery could become projectiles during the impending storm.
  • Coastal Waste and Recycling will complete regularly scheduled collections as long as drivers and crews can do so safely. Deteriorating weather could cause an abrupt cancellation of garbage and recycling collection services until the weather is favorable enough to resume those services safely.

Tips to consider should you experience flooding in your home:

  • Stay out of the residence.
  • Do not try to pump the water out.
  • Stay out of the water - There may be sewage in the water so use good hygiene if you touch the water.
  • The Town of Davie does not pump water out of private properties or residences.
  • Leave your wet/damaged items in the residence until the event is over and the water subsides.
  • For insurance purposes, consider documenting everything that is damaged - make a list and take photos if possible. This is best done once the flooding has stopped and the water has receded.

While the Town of Davie is committed to ensuring the safety of all people, we are asking our residents to help us by reviewing and preparing to implement your emergency plans. Knowing your risk, getting prepared, and staying informed are just a few steps you can take.
