Stafford County has participated in Operation Green Light for Veterans for several years, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans. The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. This year, the County offers a new option for the community to show support for veterans. Residents may stop by the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center and pick up a free green light to light their porch up green. As always, there will be an opportunity for people to post pics and messages about their favorite veterans on a social media wall on Stafford's website.
"Stafford's large veteran population has such a positive impact on our community that we want them to know how much we appreciate them," said Stafford County Board of Supervisors and proud veteran Deuntay Diggs. "I also want to remind them that when they have an issue, Stafford County is there for them."
Residents can help honor veterans in two ways - by shining a green light or by posting on Stafford's social wall.
Free Green Lights - In addition to lighting County buildings, residents, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. By shining a green light, Stafford lets its veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported. To help residents light up green, Stafford County is offering free green light bulbs in the lobby of the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA, between November 3-14, 2025, while supplies last.
Social Wall - Residents can participate by visiting https://www.staffordcountyva.gov/veteransupport to post directly to the social wall or by posting from a public social media profiles with #StaffordVets. Facebook users who have private accounts may make individual posts public. The posts will be aggregated in an online social media wall.
Feel free to share a picture of your support to "#StaffordVets. " Participation in Operation Green Light allows the community to light up green and post sentiments, allowing more residents to participate in veteran appreciation.
Now in its fourth year, Operation Green Light is spearheaded by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, building upon successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers' Association in 2021. In 2023, over 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.
