TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama will increase its presence in southeastern Alabama with the UA Wiregrass Hub, a facility supporting research and economic development, student recruitment and community partnerships.
The new facility will house the Critical Response and Information Management System for Operational Needs, or CRIMSON, Water Initiative, a program to provide access to UA's water-related expertise for communities across southeast Alabama. The CRIMSON Water Initiative will use data analysis and forecasting tools to help communities prepare for and rapidly respond to floods, droughts and other water-related challenges.
"The opening of the UA Wiregrass Hub represents another major step in The University of Alabama's commitment to strengthening innovation and economic development across our state," President Peter J. Mohler said. "By expanding nationally recognized expertise in water research and planning directly into Southeast Alabama, we are continuing our mission as an institution that serves every region of our state."
Flooding and other water hazards represent more than 75% of presidential disaster declarations nationwide. This new facility will help turn research into practical tools and strategies for decision makers across the state. The University is home to the Alabama Water Institute, NOAA National Water Center and the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility, and is uniquely positioned to lead the nation in resilience planning and real-time response strategies for these emergencies.
"Expanding our water research efforts into the Wiregrass advances our commitment to delivering impactful solutions that serve the state and the nation, while building strong, lasting partnerships with the local community," said Dr. Bryan Boudouris, vice president for research and economic development.
In addition to the CRIMSON Water Initiative, the facility will be a door to UA with areas focused on prospective student preparation, a community engagement space and additional industry support through the Alabama Small Business Development Center. The ASBDC is a statewide, inter-institutional program offering resources and assistance to small businesses across the state.
"This facility reflects the University's commitment to strategic partnerships that translate into practical solutions for Alabama communities," said Chad Tindol, senior vice president for partnerships and strategy. "Just as importantly, it creates a welcoming space that connects local students to pathways for higher education and long-term opportunity."
The Wiregrass Hub is expected to open in fall of 2026 in downtown Enterprise. Its location in the Wiregrass, including proximity to Fort Rucker, positions UA for greater future collaboration opportunities toward the goal of developing cutting-edge solutions for improving infrastructure resilience, safeguarding infrastructure and contributing to the national defense enterprise.
