July 29 North Cascades Fires Update

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - Yesterday, fire activity increased on the Border 2 Fire (approx. 2,500 acres). A westerly flow is pushing the fire to the east and northeast. The edge of the fire is within .25 miles of the northern structures nearest to the US/Canada border in Hozomeen. Firefighters used aerial delivered water support by Air Attack and four Scoopers to slow fire progression to the west. Warm and dry weather conditions are expected through Friday.

Today, firefighters are protecting structures in Hozomeen, prepping along the access road, and testing water delivery equipment. To do this, firefighters are burning fuels between the fire and the structures. Aerial delivered water support by Air Attack and Scoopers will continue to slow fire progression.

The Luna Fire (approx. 330 acres) remains west of Big Beaver Creek and north of McMillan Creek. Apache Kid Wildland Fire Module arrived and will continue a suppression strategy on the fire while being supported with a Type-3 helicopter.

Weather: Dry and warmer conditions are expected Wednesday through Friday with shifty winds on Friday. A cooling pattern with a small chance of thunderstorms and moisture is predicted for the weekend before the return of warm and dry temperatures early next week.

Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in effect beginning Monday, June 29. Campfires or the ignition of wood, briquettes, or any fuel in fire pits, fire pans, and barbeque grills, are banned in all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Gas or propane stoves, grills, or lanterns are permitted in campgrounds and wilderness areas for the use of cooking if there is no flammable material within three feet of the device.

Smoke Outlook: Smoke is present with the hot and dry weather and increased fire behavior. Visitors to the area should expect to see smoke impacts in the Ross Lake area. Air quality can change quickly. For current smoke information, visit: https://fire.airnow.gov.

Air Space Restrictions: A temporary flight restriction is in place for the fire area. Drones are prohibited in the area, especially during emergency fire response. If you fly, we can't.
