PROGRESS ON GOMORA’S ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT UNDERSCORES MUNICIPALITY’S SERVICE DELIVERY COMMITMENT

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Electricity & Energy directorate continues to prioritise service delivery enhancement through the provision of sustainable electricity to residents. Notable progress has been achieved through the electrification of Gomora informal settlement in Kuyga, Ward 40. This initiative forms part of the municipality's broader electrification efforts for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 financial years, underscoring the municipality's commitment to restoring the dignity of residents through access to fundamental services.

Standing firm in committing to service delivery enhancement, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Electricity & Energy, Cllr Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, conducted an oversight visit to Gomora on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, evaluating ongoing work to affirm timely and quality implementation of the electrification project.

The 2.8 million electrification project is set to bring power to over 560 households living in informal settlements and low-cost housing, enhancing access to essential municipal services for residents. In driving the project's success, the implementation is structured across two distinct phases, ensuring a systematic approach to delivering electricity to residents.

Phase 1: Reticulation
  • Planting Poles
  • Stringing medium and low voltage aerial cables
  • Installing service distribution boxes
  • Installing transformers
  • Testing and energising
Phase 2: Installation of service connection
  • Installation of ready boards
  • Service cable stringing
  • Installation of electricity meters
  • Testing and commission
The recent oversight visits highlight progress on the electrification project in Gomora. As of now, four transformers have been installed, with six transformers to be installed in total. On the ground 200 ready boards have been installed, with additional installations underway. With the advancement of the project, residents are set to be connected once electricity meters are in place, ensuring power and improved living conditions for Gomora residents.

The electrification initiative has also been fuelled by the need to eradicate illegal electricity connections, which pose significant safety risks. Alongside installing critical infrastructure, the Electricity & Energy directorate has proactively engaged residents on the dangers of illegal connections and the importance of protecting the electricity network.

In fast tracking the electrification project to also eradicate unsafe practises, the Electricity & Energy directorate has placed two contractors on site to ensure the timely completion of the project in Gomora.

"The electrification of informal settlements is more than just a project, it is about restoring the dignity and improving the quality of life for our residents. In the work we do, we want to ensure access to electricity for every household. We are working around the clock in ensuring that this project is completed by the end of this financial year, as two service providers are on site working through phase 1 and phase 2," reiterated Executive Mayor Lobishe.

The municipality reaffirms its commitment to accelerating electrification across all wards, closing service delivery gaps, and ensuring that every household has access to safe, reliable and sustainable energy.
