WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the House Committee on Homeland Security released an updated "Terror Threat Snapshot" assessment, highlighting the persistent terror threat to America, the West, and the world from foreign jihadist networks like ISIS and other terrorists. Read more from Ben Wolfgang via the Washington Times.
This updated snapshot comes on the heels of the horrific, ISIS-inspired premediated terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day, which tragically took the lives of 14 people and injured dozens more. Shamsud-Din Jabbar posted several videos online proclaiming his support for ISIS and describing his planned vehicular attack. The attack underscores the real threat of Homegrown Violent Extremists, which the Committee warned about extensively in its October 2024 "Terror Threat Snapshot."
We continue to see individuals radicalized to commit violence against Americans, frequently through ISIS publications and propaganda, with vehicular ramming-attacks emerging as a significant and growing threat.
On the assessment, Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) said:
"The New Orleans terrorist attack was a stark reminder that the terror threat to America is alive and persistent. The House Homeland Security Committee highlighted this fact back in October, and, sadly, Americans have witnessed major escalations in these threats just in the past three months. Emboldened by the national security blunders of the past four years, foreign terrorist organizations and jihadist networks abroad remain committed to recruiting and radicalizing individuals on U.S. soil. Make no mistake--all of the lights are still blinking red. As we remember and honor the fourteen lives lost at the hands of terrorism on New Year's Day, we must also renew our commitment to securing the homeland."
Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX) said:
"There is no question that our national security is in a state of disrepair after the past four years of failed leadership. Americans have been the target of terror at public celebrations, and ISIS and Al-Qaeda are emboldened in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia. There is immense work to do to correct course and bolster our homeland security-that work begins now."
