Danish election result confirms Social Democrats as largest force

The Party of European Socialists (PES) welcomes the outcome of the Danish parliamentary elections, with the Social Democrats led by Mette Frederiksen emerging as the largest political force.

This result reflects the continued trust of the Danish people in the leadership of the Social Democrats. Mette Frederiksen is now in a strong position to lead the talks on forming a stable and effective government.

At a time marked by geopolitical uncertainty, economic pressure and challenges to democratic values, Denmark's choice underlines continued trust in responsible leadership committed to fairness, stability, and social cohesion.

The PES also reaffirms Denmark's important role at the heart of the European project. Safeguarding international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity remain essential, including in relation to developments concerning Greenland, which must be addressed in close coordination with European partners.

PES President Stefan Löfven said:

"The Social Democrats have emerged as the largest political force in Denmark at a decisive moment.

In a fragmented political landscape, this result places Mette Frederiksen at the centre of efforts to form a stable government that can respond to citizens' concerns and uphold our shared democratic values.

At a time of growing uncertainty, citizens have chosen stability, fairness, and a clear commitment to democratic values.

We stand with Mette Frederiksen and with Denmark as they work towards a constructive outcome for both Danish citizens and Europe."

The PES remains engaged with progressive partners across Europe and will continue working to deliver on key priorities for citizens, including social justice, economic security, and the protection of democratic values and freedoms.
