Spokane Valley City Manager John Hohman Receives Excellence Award for Outstanding Civic Leadership

Spokane Valley, WA - The Washington City/County Management Association (WCMA) honored Spokane Valley City Manager John Hohman with its prestigious management Excellence Award on Aug. 14, at the organization's annual conference in Walla Walla.

The WCMA Excellence Award recognizes outstanding civic leadership and innovative management practices in city/county governance. Awards are given to managers who enhance the effectiveness of local elected officials and consistently initiate creative and successful programs. This recognition celebrates Hohman's exemplary leadership, innovative problem-solving and unwavering commitment to serving the Spokane Valley community.

"I am deeply honored to receive the Excellence Award from my peers at WCMA," shared John Hohman. "This recognition is not just about my efforts; it reflects the hard work and dedication of our Council and staff and celebrates Spokane Valley as an innovative, efficient and well-run operation. Together, we are committed to building an even brighter future for our community."

As city manager, Hohman works to implement the policies of the City Council and support the collective Council to be as effective as it can be. Hohman has helped the Council and City achieve major initiatives during his tenure, including significant advancements in public safety, infrastructure and economic development. Notably, recently the City increased police staffing and safety in a growing community, developed a national-caliber cross-country course to bolster sports tourism, and secured major state and federal grants for vital transportation and park improvement projects to improve traffic flow, safety, quality of life and economic growth. Importantly, the City continues to maintain a balanced budget that prioritizes use of existing revenues while maximizing resources for the benefit of our taxpayers, keeps staffing levels low and focuses on providing superior customer service to Spokane Valley residents.

Hohman joined the City of Spokane Valley in July 2003, just four months after incorporation. He was appointed city manager in January 2022 after serving five years as deputy city manager, five years as director of community and economic development and four years as the development services manager, after initially coming to the City as a senior development engineer.
