Donald Trump’s Week One Priority: Ripping Away Reproductive Freedoms Arrow

Ahead of Donald Trump, JD Vance, and congressional GOP leadership's appearances at the March for Life rally today, DNC Spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement:

"Only one week into Donald Trump's administration, he's proving he'll follow through on his dangerous and unpopular anti-choice agenda. Trump's Day One executive orders already laid the groundwork to rip away reproductive freedoms - and today, he and MAGA Republicans are making clear they will try to take Trump's draconian abortion bans nationwide. As women continue to face extreme danger and even death as a result of Republican abortion bans, Democrats will fight back every step of the way."

After laying the groundwork to rip away reproductive freedoms on Day One, Donald Trump is rallying to ban abortion nationwide and rip away reproductive freedoms.

Washington Post: "March for Life … [calls] the Supreme Court's [Dobbs] decision a 'wonderful blessing' on its website …

"Though the March for Life began in response to Roe v. Wade, the antiabortion movement predated the court's decision, abortion movement historian Mary Ziegler said in an interview. The ultimate goal of the movement has always been to guarantee 'the recognition of fetal personhood,' she said. …

"[Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America] agreed. 'The job is not done in the pro-life movement,' she said. 'The mission is not done. Seeing Roe fall was the beginning of the end, not the end.'"

The New Republic: "Trump Sneaks Dangerous Rights for Fetuses Into Executive Order"

"By describing a fetus as a person from conception, Trump has legitimized fetal personhood. … The legal language employed by fetal personhood also effectively categorizes any person receiving an abortion at any stage as a murderer.

"But the concept of fetal personhood is not only weaponized to limit abortion access-it's also been leveraged at the state level to restrict in vitro fertilization access for intended parents in places such as Alabama, and even used to limit access to forms of birth control."

Daily Beast: "Trump Administration Removes Reproductive Rights Website"

JD Vance, John Thune, and Mike Johnson are also speaking at the event - all as congressional Republicans lay the groundwork to help Trump ban abortion nationwide.

Emily Brooks, The Hill: "Vice President JD Vance will speak at the March for Life annual anti-abortion rally tomorrow - just announced.

"Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune also set to speak."

New York Times: "The House on Thursday passed legislation that could subject certain doctors to criminal penalties if they perform abortions, Republicans' first attempt to restrict reproductive rights since the party has secured its governing trifecta under President Trump. …

"It was the second time in two years that the Republican-lead House has passed the legislation."

REMINDER: Trump "proudly" overturned Roe v. Wade and "claimed credit" for extreme abortion bans across the country - something Vance has celebrated.

Trump: "I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade."

Trump: "For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I'm proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle."

Vance: "I think that what I really think on - so first of all, the Dobbs decision, everybody knows, overruled Roe v. Wade - I think that was the right decision."

Rolling Stone: "Trump Claims Credit for All Abortion Bans"

Trump and Vance's Project 2025 agenda includes a national abortion ban, threats to medication abortion access, and plans to defund Planned Parenthood.

Rolling Stone: "Trump Wants to Ban Abortion Nationwide: Report"

Trump: "There of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it's very important."

CNN: "During a podcast interview in January 2022, then-candidate JD Vance said he 'certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally' and was 'sympathetic' to the view that a national ban was necessary to stop women from traveling across states to obtain an abortion."

Rolling Stone: "Trump and Vance Have Backed States That Want to Surveil Pregnant Women"

"Trump and his vice presidential pick are now both saying abortion should be left up to the states, even though they both previously signaled support for national bans. They have also, alarmingly, both suggested they would be OK with states moving to surveil women's pregnancies."
