Dr. Nancy Abashian will join Ball State University as dean of University Libraries, effective April 14, 2025. Dr. Abashian brings nearly two decades of leadership experience in academic libraries, including her current role as senior director for public services and the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) at Binghamton University Libraries in New York.

"Dr. Abashian impressed us throughout the national search process with her commitment to fostering innovation, inclusion, and collaboration," said Dr. Anand R. Marri, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Ball State. "Her extensive experience in strategic planning, program development, and public services positions her to make a significant impact on our campus. I am also deeply grateful to Dr. Amy Petts for her outstanding service as interim dean of University Libraries, ensuring a seamless transition."

At Binghamton, Dr. Abashian has led initiatives that showcase her ability to integrate cutting-edge technology and innovative services into library operations. Notably, she planned and executed a multi-year, multi-million-dollar project to create a high-density storage facility, relocate more than 850,000 items, and implement advanced library systems. She also played a key role in the university's strategic planning process.

Her efforts extend beyond her institution. Dr. Abashian led the State University of New York's Alma implementation team, fostering collaboration among 64 campuses and broadening access to resources through innovative approaches to shared services. A passionate advocate for professional development, she also established scholarships and grant funding to support underrepresented students and faculty.

"I am incredibly excited and honored to join the Ball State University community as dean of University Libraries," Dr. Abashian said. "Ball State's commitment to student success, a spirit of discovery, and a culture of engagement deeply resonates with me. I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to enhance library services, foster a vibrant and inclusive learning environment, and contribute to the University's continued growth and excellence."

Dr. Abashian holds a bachelor's degree in human development and a Ph.D. in community research and public affairs from Binghamton University, as well as a Master of Library Science from the University at Buffalo. She is also a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship and a graduate of Harvard University's Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians.
