Denver Joins Amicus Brief to Protect Planned Parenthood Funding

Denver Joins Amicus Brief to Protect Planned Parenthood Funding

Published on October 15, 2025

Mayor Mike Johnston today announced Denver has joined more than a dozen cities and counties in filing an amicus brief in support of Planned Parenthood's lawsuit challenging funding cuts in President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill. An amicus brief allows a party to provide outside perspective for an issue under litigation.

"In Denver, we will always fight for the rights of women to access contraception and reproductive care," said Mayor Mike Johnston. "We are proud to join this amicus brief to push back on President Trump and the Big Beautiful Bill's unconstitutional targeting of Planned Parenthood and to ensure women receive quality, life-saving care regardless of their ability to pay."

Gov. Jared Polis recently signed a bill that provides state funding for providers like Planned Parenthood. Though welcome, the fact that Colorado may have to step in to ensure clinics continue to operate means there could be less funding for other Colorado and Denver priorities. This is especially notable given the funding gap experienced by state and local governments.

This year, both Planned Parenthood and local governments have been impacted by abrupt and unconstitutional withdrawals of federal funding and grant money, including dollars that had already been appropriated by Congress. Denver has filed four lawsuits against the Trump Administration to protect federal funding and recently filed two amicus briefs against the President's use of the military to enforce domestic policy in U.S. cities.
