AHN Physician Dr. Kalathil K. Sureshkumar Honored with National Kidney Foundation's Medical Achievement Award

PITTSBURGH (April 6, 2026) - Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is proud to announce that Kalathil K. Sureshkumar, MD, medical director for the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), was recently honored with the prestigious Medical Achievement Award. The National Kidney Foundation presented the award during its 'Kidney Gift of Life Honors,' held in March during National Kidney Month, recognizing Dr. Sureshkumar's exceptional contributions and extensive work in transplant nephrology.

The Medical Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have made significant strides in the field of kidney health and transplantation. Dr. Sureshkumar's dedication to patient care, innovative research, and leadership in the western Pennsylvania medical community have been instrumental in advancing kidney transplant services at AGH.

"Dr. Sureshkumar has been a driving force behind the growth and success of the transplant program at AGH," said Khaled Nashar, MD, chief of nephrology at AHN. "He has consistently advocated for patients, especially those in underserved communities, to ensure they have access to life-saving transplants. His commitment to expanding opportunities for patients in need truly embodies the spirit of this award."

Throughout his tenure at AGH, Dr. Sureshkumar has provided outstanding clinical care, mentored residents, fellows and junior faculty, and authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, many of which have garnered national recognition. His comprehensive contributions to medical education, research and patient advocacy underscore his profound impact on the field of nephrology. Dr. Sureshkumar is also a professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and a member of the Allegheny County Medical Society.

"It is an immense privilege to be recognized by the National Kidney Foundation with this award," says Dr. Sureshkumar. "My passion has always been to improve the lives of patients and to expand access to life-saving transplantation. This award strengthens my resolve to continue advancing patient care here at AHN."

National Donate Life Month is observed annually in April to drive awareness about the importance of organ, tissue and cornea donations. AHN encourages everyone to consider becoming a donor. To register to become an organ donor, visit registerme.org/campaign/ahn.
