Cameron University has teamed up with the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation to offer a free fishing experience to children ages 6-18 with special needs on Saturday, April 19, at Elmer Thomas Park. Participants will receive their very own rod and reel, tackle box, event t-shirt, hat and award plaque to keep. Children must have a parent/guardian attend the entirety of the event with them. Family members are welcome to attend lunch and the awards ceremony.
The event, which enables children with special needs and their caretakers to come together with community volunteers for a fun day of fishing, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes lunch. Space is limited to 40 participants, and pre-registration is required. To register, go to www.castforkids.org/event/elmerthomaspark.
Community members who want to volunteer are also welcome. Experienced anglers with basic fishing knowledge will assist the participants. Additional volunteers are needed to assist with event set-up and clean-up, registration, lunch prep and service, equipment prep and more. Volunteers can also register at www.castforkids.org/event/elmerthomaspark.
The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation (C.A.S.T. = Catch A Special Thrill) is a public charity formed in 1991 to join volunteers who love to fish with children who have special needs for a day of fishing. The organization provides adaptive fishing experiences for children experiencing visual, mobile, auditory, neurological, cognitive, medical and psychological disabilities.
