By Andrea O'Neill '06As a Biology major in 1977, Bette Grey '81 didn't feel like she had many career options aside from medical school. And while she says that most of her classes adequately prepared her academically, the one thing she missed was the kind of guidance that often comes from professionals in her field.
"Had I known [all the different options], I may have gone down a different path," Grey recalled. "I would have loved to have someone mentor me and offer positivity."
Now the owner of a medical advocacy group, it was important to Grey that she share such options and positivity with current students. She recently volunteered the William '83 and Elizabeth Bent Leadership Boot Camp as a mentor for two students - a Biology and Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy major. The bedrock of her mentorship focused on what a positive influence they can have in their respective fields.
"I always remind myself and the students they are the hope of the future, especially in healthcare." Said Grey, who was only too happy to share her knowledge with her two mentees. In turn, she learned much from them which reinforced her belief that generations can learn from each other. And while some may feel like mentoring brings a heavy responsibility, Grey says that the wisdom one can bring is a natural part of age and experience.
"The students were bright and inquisitive," said Grey. "They listened but also spoke their minds. One was exceptionally determined to stay on the path they were on, while the other was undecided about the path they were taking."
In addition, Grey says that the natural excitement and optimism of youth can be a boost.
"Getting to know and work with the students has been a great opportunity to pass along my experience and knowledge - you don't have to have all the answers," concluded Grey. "Engaging with the students will keep you young and also allow them to see that life is not a straight line."
