Prioritize Men’s Health in June with Annual Checkup

Men's Health Month in June reminds men to prioritize their health and raises awareness about the importance of routine medical checkups.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men in the U.S. are less likely to visit their physicians than women and more likely to develop chronic diseases.

CDC studies show that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the U.S., and suicide rates among men are almost four times higher than those of women.

Health experts encourage annual checkups with a physician to help men better understand their family health histories and any medical conditions they have or might experience.

"Men's Health Month is not only about physical health but also mental health and emotional well-being," said Lesley Jimenez, Texas Department of State Health Services statewide wellness coordinator. "As we age, the risk increases for common conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes - all of which can be prevented or managed with appropriate care and early detection. I encourage you, or the men in your lives, to get regular checkups, be aware of preventable risks, and take steps to improve your health."
