LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today joined Metro leaders, elected officials, workers, community members and transit advocates to celebrate the grand opening of Section 1 of the Metro D Line Extension - a transformative investment in Los Angeles' future that will connect communities, expand opportunity, and make daily life easier for Angelenos across the city. "Today we're changing how Los Angeles moves by closing a critical gap between Downtown and the Westside-cutting congestion, shortening commutes, and connecting more people to jobs and opportunity," said Mayor Bass, who also serves as a member of the Metro Board of Directors. "This is the kind of infrastructure that shapes a city's future. We are making it easier for people across Los Angeles to get where they need to go, and to get there faster."
This new extension represents more than transportation infrastructure - it is a promise of faster commutes, more reliable service, cleaner air, and greater access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and opportunity. By bringing people closer to the places and services they depend on, the Metro D Line Extension will help strengthen neighborhoods, support working families, and build a more connected, equitable, and resilient Los Angeles for generations to come.
Connecting Western Avenue to La Cienega Boulevard, the Metro D Line Extension marks a major milestone in the city's ongoing effort to expand reliable, high-capacity public transit and improve mobility along the heavily traveled Wilshire Corridor. The project is also the only new subway opening in the United States this year and comes as Los Angeles prepares to welcome the world for major international events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The extension will give residents and visitors a faster, cleaner, and more reliable way to move throughout the city while reducing congestion, improving air quality, and helping people spend less time in traffic and more time with their families.
Section 1 introduces three new underground stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega, extending subway service west from Koreatown through neighborhoods including Hancock Park, Windsor Square, the Fairfax District, and into Beverly Hills. Riders can now travel from Union Station to La Cienega in approximately 21 minutes, creating faster and more direct connections between residential neighborhoods, job centers, schools, museums, small businesses, and cultural institutions.
Mayor Bass congratulated LA Metro and the thousands of workers, engineers, construction crews, labor partners, and community stakeholders whose years of work and collaboration helped bring the project to completion. City leaders emphasized that the extension will help move the local economy forward, strengthen communities, and ensure Angelenos have greater access to jobs, education, and opportunity across the region.
Formerly known as the Purple Line, the Metro D Line Extension is one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects in Los Angeles history. Once fully completed, the extension will add seven new underground stations connecting Downtown Los Angeles to the Westside, including Beverly Hills, Century City, and UCLA.
The project was made possible through local, state, and federal partnerships and reflects Los Angeles' broader commitment to increasing transit ridership, reducing roadway congestion, improving environmental sustainability, and expanding equitable access to opportunity for residents across the city.
The D Line Extension will continue west in future phases, further transforming how Angelenos move throughout Los Angeles for generations to come.
