Allegheny Health Network Opens New Midwifery Practice East of Pittsburgh, Expanding OB/GYN Health Services

Allegheny Health Midwives Practice Now Delivers at AHN Forbes and AHN Jefferson Hospitals with Most Recent Expansion to Communities East of Pittsburgh into Westmoreland County

PITTSBURGH (February 19, 2026) - Allegheny Health Network's (AHN) Women's Institute today announced the official opening of a new midwife practice location, a part of the Allegheny Health Midwives family, to further expand comprehensive women's health services (obstetrical and gynecological) for communities east of Pittsburgh into Westmoreland County.

The new office - located at 310 Rodi Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15235 - will initially be staffed by two highly skilled and certified nurse midwives (CNM), Amber DePra and Diana Shane, both of whom will be joined by Emily Stewart, CNM, in April. The office will be open four days a week on a rotating basis and established or new patients can make an appointment by calling 412-DOCTORS or 412-856-7500.

Allegheny Health Midwives provides a full range of obstetric and gynecological wellness services from early onset puberty through post-menopausal care. Although most closely associated with prenatal, labor and postpartum care, CNMs also perform pap smears and annual exams, manage birth control prescriptions and manage symptoms related to menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome and sexually transmitted infections, among other conditions.

"We are thrilled to bring this remarkable care team closer to home for so many women in the eastern Pittsburgh region into Westmoreland County," said Marcia Klein-Patel, MD, PhD, Chair of AHN Women's Institute. "The addition of this new midwifery practice underscores our network's ongoing commitment to providing accessible, high-quality, and personalized care to patients. Our certified nurse midwives offer a unique blend of clinical expertise and compassionate support, ensuring that our patients feel heard, understood and well cared-for, no matter what stage of their lives they may be in."

For expectant mothers choosing midwifery care, all deliveries will take place at the state-of-the-art AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, ensuring access to comprehensive hospital resources, leading OB/GYN physicians, a safe, private birthing suite and Level II neonatal intensive care unit.

"When working with our obstetric patients, our goal is to work collaboratively to provide them with personalized and tailored care plans - whether that's an epidural and a scheduled induction, or an all-natural birth experience," said Amy Gramz, CNM and APP supervisor. "We take time to learn about patient goals, practice shared decision-making and form a strong partnership with our families to achieve their desired experience, as long as it's within medical possibility."

More specifically, for higher-risk pregnancies and cesarean sections, Allegheny Health Midwives works closely with OB/GYN physicians from East Suburban Associates, all of whom also have delivering privileges at AHN Forbes.

"AHN Forbes Hospital has proudly cultivated a strong women's health program for nearly half a century," said Mark Rubino, MD, president at AHN Forbes. "The expansion of our network's midwifery service broadens options for pregnancy and delivery for patients across the communities we serve and further empowers women with personalized care that is within the safety of a hospital environment."

Contrary to popular belief, approximately 94% of CNM-led births take place in a hospital - not a home setting - according to the National Institutes of Health.

Like OB/GYN physicians, CNMs abide by guidelines established by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. A CNM is a registered nurse who went on to an accredited midwifery school for education in birth, gynecology care and women's services.

Following accreditation, CNMs must remain certified through the American Midwifery Certification Board and maintain an active nurse license, a medical midwifery license, and a prescriptive license.

The Rodi Road location is the third outpatient clinic for Allegheny Health Midwives who also serve patients from AHN's Uniontown and Jefferson Hospital sites.
