On Your TV: Democratic Governors Slam Trump's Tariffs Hiking Prices on Working Families and Small Businesses
As Donald Trump rolled out a sweeping set of tariffs that will have disastrous impacts on working families and small businesses, Democratic governors held a press call and took to national TV shows to condemn Trump's policies that continue to raise costs on everyday goods.
Here's how Democratic governors are speaking out, standing up for people in their states, and lowering costs for families.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro on MSNBC's The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle: "This is super simple: Donald Trump pressed a button, raised costs, started a trade war with our allies, which is going to further raise costs on the American people and make people's lives worse … So from the beer you drink to the cars you buy … things are going to cost more for Pennsylvania companies and Pennsylvania consumers."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on MSNBC's All In with Chris Hayes: "Every economist, conservative or liberal, will tell you [tariffs] simply don't work … [Trump] doesn't fundamentally understand how trade works. It goes back to what I continue to say - I think the biggest myth perpetuated in this country is that Donald Trump understands anything about business … This is a tax on working people."
New York Governor Kathy Hochul on MSNBC's The Beat with Ari Melber:"[Trump's tariffs] are the largest tax increase in American history - nothing short of that … This is cataclysmic, it is an earthquake, and we're going to feel the tremors for a long time … Who [is Trump] 'liberating?' … [He's] hurting real people in our state and across this country."
Colorado Governor Jared Polis on Bloomberg's Balance of Power: "This is one of the biggest tax hikes in American history, it's not liberation day, it's recession day…It looks like they're actually fixated on a tax increase here… It will destroy American manufacturing. I've talked to many manufacturers here who are going to close down and move overseas or are considering doing that…"
Delaware Governor Matt Meyer on CBS's America Decides and Scripps News: "What I see is an America that is getting tired of [Trump's] gimmicks … Americans wanted lower prices. They wanted a government that delivers efficiency and value. That doesn't mean taking a chainsaw to every government service, and it certainly doesn't mean administering a tax that's a minimum of 10 percent on just about every good we buy."
DGA Chair Kansas Governor Laura Kelly on KWCH 12 News: "Americans did not vote for this chaos. It's not what they want or need from their leaders. We do need to do more to help our companies and workers compete by bringing business back home, by growing and strengthening our workforce, and by investing in American-made manufacturing."
