Klobuchar: USDA Reversing Course on Prevented-Plant Buy-Up Crop Insurance

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the reversal at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing.

WASHINGTON - After pushing the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, announced that U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins agreed to reverse a planned elimination of producers' access to prevented-plant buy-up crop insurance.

Prevented-plant buy-up crop insurance allows farmers to buy higher crop insurance coverage in case increasingly frequent extreme weather prevents them from planting crops.

"Back in January, Senators Boozman, Hoeven, and I led 16 of our colleagues in encouraging USDA to reverse course on their planned elimination of prevented-plant crop insurance buy-up coverage," Klobuchar said. "With this week's announcement, farmers will be able to resume buying this important coverage option. With extreme weather making crop yields less predictable and tariffs and the war with Iran raising input costs, prevented-plant crop insurance is essential to helping producers stay afloat when disaster strikes at planting time."

Senators Klobuchar (D-MN), Boozman (R-AR), and Hoeven (R-ND) led a January letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins urging the department to reinstate additional crop insurance coverage for acres prevented from being planted.
