UNM launches new app to enhance campus safety and support

The University of New Mexico is making it easier than ever for students, faculty, staff and visitors to stay connected to campus safety resources with the launch of the new UNM Safe mobile app. The new safety app will replace LoboGuardian, which will be retired July 31.

Designed as UNM's official campus safety application, UNM Safe provides users with immediate access to emergency services, safety tools, campus resources and real-time information-all from a single, easy-to-use platform.

The app, developed by AppArmor and available for iOS and Android devices as a free download, features Mobile BlueLight, which allows users to instantly contact emergency responders while simultaneously sharing their real-time GPS location with the UNM Police Department. Additional features include Friend Walk, enabling users to share their live location with friends or family while traveling across campus, Tip Reporting for submitting non-emergency or anonymous reports to UNMPD, and a comprehensive Safety Toolbox that provides quick access to emergency plans, campus maps, transit information, mental health resources and academic support services.

Users can also quickly contact 911 or the UNM Police Department with one touch, locate emergency BlueLight phones and AEDs, view campus and City of Albuquerque bus routes, and notify loved ones that they are safe following an emergency.

"At UNM, the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors is our highest priority," said UNM Police Chief Joe Silva. "UNM Safe puts critical safety resources directly into the hands of our campus community, making it easier to quickly connect with emergency responders, access important campus services and make informed decisions during both emergencies and everyday situations. It's another important tool that helps us strengthen campus safety through communication, preparedness and partnership."

The launch of UNM Safe is part of the University's continued investment in strengthening campus safety and expanding resources that help foster a secure and welcoming environment for everyone who learns, works and visits UNM.

"Whether someone is walking across campus after an evening class, reporting suspicious activity, or looking for safety resources, UNM SAFE makes those tools easier to access," said UNM Emergency Manager David Burke. "Our goal is to empower every member of the UNM community with the information and resources they need to stay safe, informed, and connected.

"The app also reinforces the importance of the 'See Something, Say Something' philosophy by providing simple, accessible tools for reporting safety concerns. By making it easier for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors to report suspicious activity, we strengthen our shared responsibility for maintaining a safe and prepared campus."
