Joint news release with Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Today, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials and experts from third-party laboratories sampled ALPS treated water diluted with seawater on the premises of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)'s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS).
As a part of additional measures under the IAEA framework, IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories visited Japan and collected samples today.
In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred on conducting the additional measures under the IAEA framework. This additional measure was conducted as the sixth mission, following the missions in October 2024, February 2025, April 2025, June 2025, and September 2025.
In the additional measure, IAEA officials and experts from laboratories in China, Republic of Korea, Russia, and Switzerland sampled ALPS treated water diluted with seawater prior to the discharge into the sea on the premises of TEPCO's FDNPS. This was the second mission for sampling ALPS treated water diluted with seawater as a part of additional measures, following the mission in April 2025.
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA in sharing information with the international community in a highly transparent manner and fostering better understanding of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water within both the domestic and international communities.
