Georgia DOT to Implement Continuous Weekend Closures Beginning August 28

Continuous Lane Closures on I-20 East and Westbound for Paving Operations

DECATUR, GA - Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will implement continuous weekend double-lane closures on I-20 to complete final paving activities for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project.

When/Where:
Beginning Friday, August 28 at 9 p.m. until Monday, August 31 at 5 a.m.

  • Continuous closure of two alternating lanes on I-20 westbound between Wesley Chapel Road and the I-285 Interchange
  • Two lanes will remain open at all times

  • Continuous closure of two alternating lanes on I-20 eastbound between Columbia Drive and Wesley Chapel Road
  • Two lanes will remain open at all times

The extended weekend lane closures will allow crews to complete paving operations more efficiently and safely while minimizing the need for multiple shorter closures over a longer duration.

Additional extended weekend closures may be implemented on I-20 to allow for final paving activities across project limits.

Motorists should expect significant delays which may impact expected travel times and are encouraged to use navigation apps to identify alternate routes when possible. Drivers traveling through the area should use caution and remain alert in the work zone.

Substantial Completion is anticipated in Q3 2026.

These activities are for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project (PI #0013915), one of the advanced Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP) projects. The project is reconstructing the interchange at I-285 and I-20 in DeKalb County to improve safety and the efficient flow of traffic.
