Buie holds Baltic guest artist residencies, hosts local trumpet conference

Randy Grabowski leads trumpeters in warmups at the fourth Greater Idaho Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild meeting

Zach Buie, associate professor of trumpet, recently enjoyed guest artist residencies at the Latvian Academy of Music and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He performed with the internationally acclaimed ensemble, Palisade Trumpet Collective. The ensemble is comprised of six leading trumpet professors from across the United States.

In addition to their chamber music concerts, the ensemble premiered a new work by Anthony Plog accompanied by the symphonic wind ensemble at the Latvian Academy. The residencies included solo and chamber music masterclasses. Buie also gave presentations on developing a project-driven career and how to build a strategic practice routine rooted in principles.

Indrek Vau, the trumpet professor and principal trumpet of the Estonian National Orchestra, organized the Estonia residency. Sigita Razminoviča, the academy's International Projects Coordinator, and Jens Emil Holm, the trumpet professor and principal trumpet of the Latvian National Orchestra, organized the Latvia residency.

Buie also hosted the Fourth Greater Idaho Chapter of the International Trumpet Guild on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Boise State. This event brought more than 50 trumpet players together from across the state for a day of educational workshops and inspiring performances. Featured guest artists included Megan Bailey from Northern Illinois University, Javian Brabham from New York University and Randy Grabowski, recently retired from the University of Northern Iowa. The event featured student performers from Boise State, as well as Eddie Ludema from Idaho State University.

Grabowski led a collaborative warm-up session to kick off the day. Bailey coached solo performers on a wide variety of repertoire providing actionable strategies to improve performance and musicianship. Brabham gave an engaging presentation on maintaining healthy chops through efficient practice.

The day culminated with a collaborative recital. Buie led students in a large trumpet ensemble performance. The guest artists and faculty performed as a trumpet quintet. Each artist also performed a solo work for a very appreciative audience. The sense of community among Idaho trumpet players continues to thrive.
