Can Vistra Stock Rally 50% After This Dip

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Shares of Vistra (VST) dropped 14.4% from their October 7 close to October 28, and buyers are asking whether the stock will keep falling. A 50% rally would not be new for Vistra. After its four deeper drops since May 2017, the stock's highest price within a year was a median 68.8% above its price on the dip date. But what did buyers keep a year later, and what did they sit through first?

What Vistra Buyers Kept A Year After Past Drops

Buyers kept a gain in all four cases. Vistra stock has fallen more than 20% within 30 trading days four times since May 2017. Twelve months after each of those dip dates, the shares traded higher by a median 30.5%. Those past drops were all deeper than the current decline so far, and this one may still go further.

Collecting that gain took patience. In the year following each drop, the stock's lowest close was a median 9.8% below its price on the dip date, meaning buyers sat through a further fall first. The highest price arrived a median 335 days after the dip date, or about 11 months later.

How Sound Is Vistra's Business Today?

Vistra is producing more cash than a year ago, even as its sales slipped in the latest quarter. The company generated $5.12 billion in cash from operations over the four quarters to June 30, 2026, up from $4.23 billion a year earlier. Revenue grew 3.8% across those twelve months, but fell 5.5% from a year earlier in fiscal Q2 2026. The stock trades at 21.7 times those twelve months of earnings, compared with a multiple of 22.6 for the S&P 500, meaning a buyer pays slightly less than the broader market for each dollar of profit.

Texas remains the unsettled part of the business. On the August 7, 2026 call, management said power prices in ERCOT, its Texas market, have softened recently. Higher prices in the PJM market, where Vistra also sells power, and the company's hedging do not fully make up for that, management said, leaving 2027 adjusted EBITDA, the company's own profit measure, trending toward the lower end of its $7.4 billion to $7.8 billion range. On the other side, Vistra is in active negotiations with large power customers as data center building stays strong. Management added that two deals left out of that range, the Cogentrix acquisition and power purchase agreements with Meta, could add roughly $700 million to the 2027 midpoint. The company plans to update its 2026 and 2027 guidance with its third-quarter results, which Vistra is expected to report in November 2026.

How Much Further Has Vistra Stock Fallen Before?

Following its February 2025 drop, Vistra stock's lowest close over the next year was 24.4% below its price on the dip date, marking the deepest further fall of the four. The stock has also had a hard year: over the twelve months to October 28, 2026, a period that includes this drop, Vistra lost 28.0% while the S&P 500 returned 14.0%.

For buying now to be worth that risk, this drop would have to end the way the four before it did. The stock would need to be higher a year later, even if it falls further along the way, while Vistra keeps producing more cash with Texas power prices soft. Management's 2027 profit guidance is the measure to watch. The update is due with the November report, though management said it would wait for the first report after the Cogentrix deal closes if that transaction has not closed by then.
