Wayne State University Students host second annual Detroit Youth Health Expo, inspiring high schoolers to explore careers in health care

On Oct. 25, Wayne State University students will host the second annual Detroit Youth Health Expo, a free event aimed at inspiring local high school students to explore careers in health care.

As many as 300 students are expected to attend the event, where they will network with health care professionals and discover the opportunities available within the health care field. Wayne State President emeritus M. Roy Wilson will serve as the keynote speaker.

By exposing students to a multitude of job options, event organizers said that they hope to help address a shortage of students from urban communities who choose health care as a career.

"There are so many opportunities in health care," said James Wairagu, a first-year medical student and co-founder and president of DYHE. "It's the largest employer in Michigan, and whether you become a physician, pharmacist, nurse, or even a dental hygienist, these careers provide stability and a chance to secure your future."

This year's expo will feature panels with health care professionals along with interactive stations where students can engage directly with career information. Attendees also will have access to various departments across the university, including the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

"By introducing young people from our communities in Detroit to health care careers, we are not only addressing critical workforce needs but also empowering future leaders who will contribute to the health and well-being of our city and beyond," said School of Medicine Dean Dr. Wael Sakr.

Several faculty members and students have volunteered for the event, while local businesses and organizations will provide financial support. Sponsors include the Irvin D. Reid Honors College; Office of the Provost; Wayne Med-Direct; and the WSUSOM Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access.

The Detroit Health Expo will take place Friday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Wayne State Student Center ballroom.
