Explore More this Season: Parks and Rec Activities Guide + Seasonal Positions

Des Moines, Iowa - Wednesday, April 1, 2026 - April showers bring May flowers, fun, and adventure. Des Moines Parks and Recreation has adventure planned for you, no matter the forecast! The 2026 Spring/Summer Activities Guide is now available, and many activities are NOW OPEN for registration! Physical copies of the Activities Guide are available at the Municipal Service Center, Community Recreation Centers and Des Moines Public Libraries.

The guide offers a variety of programs, events, and outdoor experiences for all ages. From swim lessons, summer camp and special events to sports leagues, mobile recreation and environmental education, there's something for everyone. Families can also explore programming at dog parks, cemeteries, and city-wide recreational facilities.

"We can't wait to see residents connect at events, grow skills through programs and make unforgettable summer memories through our department," said Janis Steele, Recreation Manager. "From outdoor adventures like camps and athletics, we have something for you."

Early registration is encouraged, especially for high-demand programs like swim and tennis lessons, which fill up quickly. Last year, nearly 4,000 kids participated in swim lessons, and this summer is expected to be just as busy.

To support these programs, Des Moines Parks and Recreation is still in the process of hiring seasonal staff for a variety of positions, including lifeguards, Summer Camp, and Gray's Lake staff. Longer term, 7-month employment opportunities are also available with the Parks Maintenance division and year-round, part-time positions for year-round programming like Park-N-Play also has openings. These jobs offer competitive wages, flexible hours, and a chance to make a difference in the community.

"Working for Parks and Recreation not only provides excellent experience but it is a truly fulfilling job that allows you to be involved with your community, stay active in the outdoors and help residents create memorable experiences," said Amarre Negussie, Recreation Supervisor. "If you're looking for a summer job, we encourage you to apply."

Financial assistance is available for youth swim lessons and athletic programs through partnerships with Des Moines Public Schools and IMPACT Community Action Partnership. Families can apply for the GRASP and YRSP scholarships, which reduce registration fees to just $5 for eligible participants.
