"This investment is a historic win for the Eldon community, expanding one of Iowa's most iconic landmarks into an even stronger hub for education, tourism, and community life," said Rep. Nunn . "By increasing classroom space at the American Gothic House Center, we're creating new opportunities for students, families, and visitors to engage with Iowa's rich heritage while driving economic growth across Southeast Iowa."
Rep. Nunn secured the funding through the Community Project Funding (CPF) process. The award, administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Community Facilities program, will support construction of a new, ADA-compliant classroom addition at the American Gothic House Center.
Once complete, the new space will accommodate up to 100 people and significantly expand year-round programming for local schools and the public. In addition to educational programming, the facility will support community events, meetings, and rentals-creating new opportunities for local organizations and increasing economic activity throughout Eldon and the surrounding region.
"We're grateful to Representative Zach Nunn and USDA for supporting a dedicated education classroom at the American Gothic House Center," said Cari Nicely, Administrator, American Gothic House Center . "I truly appreciate Representative Nunn's commitment to communities and families-he's been a strong advocate for the kind of local places where kids learn, families gather, and neighbors connect. This space will help us welcome large groups, expand hands-on learning for schools and the public, and strengthen year-round opportunities that benefit Eldon while also drawing new visitors to the community."
"The Area 15 Regional Planning Commission is thrilled by the announcement of funding to support the expansion of the American Gothic Visitor Center in Eldon," said Chris Bowers, Executive Director, Area 15 Regional Planning Commission . "The American Gothic House is a cornerstone tourism destination in our region, and this project will greatly enhance the experience for all who visit. Tourism plays a vital role in our regional economic development strategy, and we sincerely thank Congressman Nunn for his leadership and support in advancing this important project."
"The planned classroom addition to the American Gothic House Center in Eldon, Iowa, represents a transformative investment in local education, arts, and cultural preservation," said Rick Tebbs, Director, Wapello County Conservation Board . "This expanded space will allow students and visitors to engage more deeply with history and creative programming year-round. We are profoundly grateful for the community grant secured under the leadership of Zach Nunn. His support strengthens rural communities, enriches learning opportunities, and ensures this treasured landmark continues inspiring future generations."
"This is a good thing," said Mayor of Eldon Randy Lee McClure . "We need more stuff like this in small towns that have gone by the wayside, things to try to keep them."
"Being a Wapello County Board of Supervisor, the City Clerk of Eldon, and a lifelong resident of Eldon, I am excited about the new educational addition to the American Gothic House Center," said Carrie Teninty, Wapello County Supervisor . "This valuable asset attracts tourists and supports local small businesses, making it a great investment in our community's future."
"As the State Senator representing this community, I am pleased to celebrate the announcement of the new educational building at the American Gothic Center," said State Sen. Cherielynn Westrich . "This exciting addition will enrich the tourist experience while strengthening invaluable assets within our southeast Iowa community. I appreciate all the efforts that Zach Nunn has put into bringing this wonderful facility."
"It is great when we see good things happening in Iowa," said State Rep. Hans Wilz . "I know how hard this team down here in Eldon works to put out a quality product about Iowa history! To have the opportunity to expand with a space that will serve as a learning center and a meeting place for the community is a win-win for Southeast Iowa."
The American Gothic House, made famous by Grant Wood's iconic 1930 painting, remains one of Iowa's most recognizable cultural landmarks. The classroom addition will expand capacity for thousands of students and visitors annually-strengthening Eldon's tourism economy and preserving a key part of Iowa's artistic legacy.
The project has received strong support from local officials, regional partners, educators, conservation leaders, and community members across Wapello County, underscoring its broad regional importance.
