Boise State University, in partnership with Idaho higher education peers, will begin sunsetting the Retiree Life Insurance Program effective July 1, 2026. State of Idaho agencies and other higher education institutions have already discontinued these retiree life insurance plans due to rising premium costs and budgetary considerations, with the remaining higher education institutions discontinuing their programs this year.
To support employees who are already planning for retirement, Boise State is implementing a phased transition. Employees who document their intent to retire with the Boise State Human Resources (HR) benefits team no later than June 30, 2026 remain eligible to enroll in the program if they otherwise meet the retiree life insurance eligibility requirements and retire within the approved FY27 timeline outlined below. Employees currently eligible have been notified directly of this upcoming change.
Current retirees already enrolled in the program will continue to be covered.
Following the sunsetting of this program, options will still exist for retirees to convert certain life insurance policies to self-pay options. Contact [email protected] for more information.
Boise State currently pays life insurance premiums for eligible retirees, at time of retirement, for decreasing term life insurance coverage.
