The City of McKinney celebrated the grand reopening of the Recreation Center at Towne Lake this week, unveiling extensive renovations aimed at enhancing community engagement and wellness. The event also marked the ribbon-cutting for The Light Walk at Towne Lake, an innovative illuminated trail designed to enrich the park's nighttime experience.
The Recreation Center now features updated fitness equipment, modernized gathering areas, expanded restrooms and locker rooms.
"These projects reflect our commitment to creating inclusive and inspiring spaces that enhance quality of life for all McKinney residents," said Amy Kinkade, Director of Parks and Recreation. "With support from MCDC, we've been able to bring new energy to our parks and reimagine how our community can connect through outdoor spaces, day or night."
The McKinney Light Walk introduces a lighted concrete pathway, offering an immersive way for residents and visitors to experience Towne Lake Park after dark.
"Supporting projects like these is at the heart of MCDC's mission to invest in quality-of-life initiatives that benefit the entire community," said McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) Board Chair George Fuller. "We're proud to help bring these exciting, family-friendly amenities to life and to see the lasting impact they will have on McKinney's neighborhoods and public spaces."
The multi-year plan for Towne Lake Park includes a new performance pavilion, additional trails, improved lake access, and a dog park. Designed to be resilient to occasional flooding, the developments feature elevated boardwalks and bridges, a treetop pavilion, and relocated parking.
"For generations, Towne Lake Park has been an important gathering spot for our community and has embodied the very best that our parks system offers," said Kinkade. "We are excited to reinvest in this beautiful place to make sure that it remains a celebrated landmark that delivers a truly unique experience for all users."
