Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries across the globe, and Wyoming stands to benefit significantly from its strategic implementation. By showcasing case studies, research and public-private partnerships, the third annual "Wyoming Computing Symposium: AI for Wyoming Industries" will explore the diverse and growing applications of AI in advancing Wyoming's economy.
The Wyoming Computing Symposium is scheduled Thursday-Friday, Sept. 25-26, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. upstairs in the Wyoming Union at the University of Wyoming. The two-day event will be filled with insightful talks, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities. Attendees can dive into the world of AI and discover how it is transforming industries in Wyoming.
The symposium is organized by the UW School of Computing and the UW Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in collaboration with UW's Office of Industry and Strategic Partnerships, the Advanced Research Computing Center, and Information Technology.
The event, associated with the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede, is free and open to the public. To register, go here.
"Wyoming's economy is anchored in vital industries that shape the state's future," says Dane Taylor, an associate professor in the UW School of Computing. "This symposium seeks to showcase and initiate applied AI projects that advance key sectors through computational innovation."
Taylor will provide the symposium's opening remarks.
Keynote speakers are Sean Young, director, AECO, geospatial and AI solutions industry marketing for NVIDIA, and Chris Ritter, division director, scientific computing and AI at Idaho National Laboratory. The two will discuss AI applications.
Other keynote speakers are Baskar Ganapathysubramanian, the Anderlik Professor of Engineering at Iowa State University, and Yaqoob Majeed, an assistant professor in the UW Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. They will discuss AI for agriculture.
There will be breakout group discussions and a panel on AI for Wyoming that will be led by representatives from Science Institute research centers to brainstorm AI projects for these centers. Taylor will serve as moderator.
Students will have various networking opportunities, including connecting with employers such as NVIDIA and Idaho National Laboratory. Students can potentially land their next internship, research gig or job lead. Students also can discover how AI is transforming energy, agriculture, wildlife, health care and automation in Wyoming. Additionally, students can get inspired and come up with ideas for their projects, research and career paths.
Faculty have opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, where they can engage with colleagues across campus and Wyoming industries to spark new research ideas, identify cross-disciplinary projects and build teams for grant proposals. Faculty also can hear directly from national leaders in AI and explore how that expertise can connect to faculty teaching and research. Additionally, faculty can present their own AI-related work via poster presentations (submissions will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 19); highlight student projects; and raise the visibility of their research within UW and to internal/external partners looking for collaboration opportunities.
