LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today gathered the leadership of LAUSD and the unions representing its workers - as well as rank and file workers - to celebrate the negotiations that concluded at around 2 a.m. this morning to avoid a strike that would have affected hundreds of thousands of students and families across Los Angeles. Mayor Bass was actively engaged in the negotiations and was in the negotiating room until a final agreement was reached in the wee hours of the morning. Mayor Bass also played a key role in ending a strike by LAUSD employees in 2023. Watch the livestreamhere. Photos available here.
"Our kids are in class and school workers are on the job, caring for and shaping the minds of our future. The City of Los Angeles has no jurisdiction over the school district. But my job is to fight for Angelenos no matter what - for every kid, for every teacher and school worker, for every parent. And we got the job done.
"I stepped into the negotiations to make sure every effort was made to find an agreement, because a strike would disrupt the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids and their parents who need childcare and need to go to work. I also stepped in to make sure the City was prepared to provide safe places for children if schools were closed - and I am glad that we no longer need those contingency plans.
"It's hard to think of a more important role in America than working in our schools and taking on the responsibility of shaping our future generations while also modeling the values that we want to see in our young people.
"Our teachers, cafeteria workers, administrators, special education assistants, custodians, bus drivers, and other dedicated workers care for our children every day, and they deserve a fair contract. Now, there is one on the table, and class is in session."
