SEATTLE - A forum on increasing access to justice across Washington will spotlight housing stability and celebrate Northwest Justice Project's (NJP) 30th anniversary on Thursday. The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) will host the event, "Housing Justice in Action: A Forum on Legal Aid & Pro Bono Impact," in partnership with NJP and Amazon.
Speakers at the event will include NJP Executive Director Abby Daquiz, LSC Board Chair John Levi and Washington State Representative Nicole Macri.
Former U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington John McKay will host a panel discussion on partnerships that address housing-related legal challenges. The panel features Scott Crain, director of advocacy at NJP; Christy Fosberg, a former client of NJP; Yousri Omar, director and associate general counsel at Amazon; and Holly Stevens, chief data officer at LSC.
NJP is Washington's largest publicly funded legal services organization. For three decades, NJP has provided no-cost legal assistance and representation to low-income people across the state. The organization serves people facing life-changing legal problems like domestic violence, predatory lending, debt collection, eviction and foreclosure.
"Civil legal aid is an essential, if often invisible, part of housing stability. More than half of NJP's cases involve housing, often at the moment a family is about to lose everything," said Abby Daquiz, Executive Director of NJP. "For 30 years, we've helped people stay housed, safe and whole, and we're proud to celebrate that work alongside the partners who make it possible."
NJP is one of the 129 legal aid organizations funded by LSC nationwide. As the nation's largest funder of civil legal assistance, LSC provides direct support to independent nonprofit legal services organizations serving low-income Americans across all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. LSC-funded organizations help over 6 million people with their legal problems each year.
"When Americans who cannot afford an attorney face legal problems that impact their families' safety, housing or financial security, their local legal aid office is a vital resource," said LSC President Ron Flagg. "LSC is proud to recognize Northwest Justice Project's 30 years of life-changing services for Washingtonians, and all of the dedicated NJP staff who create this impact."
The forum will take place on Thursday, October 29 from 4 - 5:45 pm PT at Amazon Nitro South, 2250 7th Ave. Media representatives planning to attend in person must pre-register by emailing [email protected]. Press who do not pre-register will not be admitted.
The event will also be livestreamed on LSC's YouTube channel.
